Open Courseware

This week in class week learned about Open Courseware (OCW). I believe that this will open up many oppotunities for learning. I found some more information on this at http://www.ocwconsortium.org/aboutus/whatisocw

I think this will benefit children that are being homeschooled or people that like to learn online. However, I do believe that a classroom setting helps children learn and is essential to the learning process. Depending on the learning style of your child, whether she/he is a self starter, hands-on, or a book worm will determine how much the OCW will help with learning.

  1. I think you're raising a very good point about the ideal academic level in which OCW and OERs are more helpful, Christina. The existing information about any topic on the Internet is so vast that it's intimidating and one could waste practically many hours trying to filter out the useful resources. So, I do totally agree with you that for a school level it's important to have the teachers structuring the content and providing on going guidance about what resources to use.

At higher levels, such as undergrad or graduate, students are hopefully more capable of searching and finding the most appropriate resources that they need to succeed in their academic projects.

  2. Yes I agree with you, Christina. Children at certain ages are not suitable to learn beyond classroom setting. I still believe in the importance of physical/real social interactions and also intensive guidance in learning.
